“In a minute,” she replied. “I’m enjoying the view.” We had both been admiring the serene Vermont landscape, but right now we were staring at each other intently and neither of us could look away.

“I like to be predictable. Then I know exactly what to expect, no surprises,” Jack responded. He shrugged and a wisp of his black hair fell across his forehead, giving him a nonchalant vibe.

“We’re out of Fairport, live a little.” I thought about how we could make things more interesting on this trip. I leaned forward, looked to both sides to see who might be listening, then pitched my voice to say, “I dare you to spread your wings and do things you wouldn’t normally do at home during this trip.”

Jack looked at me for a beat and I thought for sure he was going to turn me down and call me crazy. Then a smile cracked across his face and his dimples made an appearance. “You’re on, Pixie.”

“Jack is the compost master, I’m just the shit disturber,” Val said with a wink.

“Pixie…” I said, running my hand along her back and tracing the shape of her hip back and forth. Both of our hearts were beating fast, clearly in sync with each other. Probably more than our overthinking rational minds seemed to be.

A tentative smile took over her mouth. “Magic pixie dust, huh?”

“Yep, it’s the only way to explain your power over me,” I said. I kissed her reverently, slowly, and with all the love in my heart.
